New Textbook Scholarship to help COBI students

The scenario is all too familiar. A hard-working, intelligent student with limited financial resources makes it to the college of their choice: The University of Toledo College of Business and Innovation. The student has managed to cover housing costs, daily living expenses, and tuition through part time jobs and loans. However, textbooks and course materials must also be purchased at the beginning of each semester.

Although not a surprise, books can be an expense the student cannot comfortably afford.

The National Association of College Stores reports that the average price of a new textbook increased from $58 in 2012 to $80 in 2016. The Association also notes the annual cost for course materials to be about $1,200 per year.

Not every book is available in used condition, and a used or borrowed book, if located, may not be the same edition required by the professor. Many textbooks are available electronically but the access codes are generally no less expensive than the printed version. Furthermore, many students prefer having a printed version of the book because they can write their personal learning notes in the textbook along the way.

College of Business and Innovation students have said that textbook scholarships would be helpful. With your support, that is a possibility for our students beginning in Fall 2018.

Our goal is to establish a new College of Business and Innovation Textbook Scholarship which would provide $500 for an academic year ($250 per semester) to purchase textbooks for undergraduate students. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years if the student meets the following criteria:

- Must be registered for at least nine credit hours in each applicable semester

- Must have filed the FAFSA for the applicable semester, or have evidence of their financial
situation/need

- Must be in good academic standing

Contributions from alumni and friends like you can make this scholarship a reality for deserving students. Please consider a gift of $25, $50, $100 or more to defer the cost of course materials. Your gift can give our students the gift they need to start each semester with the confidence and resources they need to succeed in the classroom!

Thank you in advance for your support!
